A judge has imposed a restraining order which bans a man from harassing, pestering, threatening or intimidating Derry based Priest Fr Michael Canny.

Miguel Ramos is also banned from going within 50 metres of St Columb’s Church, Chapel Road, Derry.

Ramos, of Heron Way, Derry, pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to steal and interfering with vehicles on April 9.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 40-year-old Ramos was rummaging around the vestry of St Columb’s Chapel and then tried the handles of a number of cars parked in the adjoining car park.

The court heard he was ‘on some sort of mission’ to get some money.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin told the court his client has a number of dependencies and often finds himself ‘destitute’ as a result.

He added the 40-year-old is a ‘mild mannered individual’ and this incident was a ‘crime of desperation rather than any particular malice’.

Mr Devlin said Ramos, who appeared in court in a cast and using a crutch, was the victim of a serious assault in recent weeks.

District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a four month sentence for two years.

He also imposed the restraining order for a period of three years.
