A defence lawyer offered to show a District Judge the bronze medal won by middle weight boxer Connor Coyle at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Before Magherafelt Magistrates Court was the boxer’s father, Owen Coyle from Cashelhill Park, Derry, who was fined £165 with five penalty points for speeding.

The court heard the 49-year-old Derry City Council worker was detected travelling at 102mph at Glenshane Road, Maghera, on April 29.

His lawyer explained that Coyle was taking his son to an important meeting with his trainer and they were running late.

He said they made the meeting and it had a successful outcome as Connor went on to win a bronze medal for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.

The lawyer said the defendant had brought the medal to court with him but District Judge Alan White said he did not need to see it.
