Eamon Rory Owen McTaggart, of Main Street, Feeny, admitted disorderly behaviour and assaulting police.

The charges relates to an incident in the Strand Road area of the city on May 25.

McTaggart had been asked to leave a shop on Stand Road and when he refused staff requested police assistance.

They escorted the 23-year-old out of the shop and searched him.

During the search, McTaggart became abusive calling the police officers ‘fat c****’.

He then threw a punch at one of the officers, however did not strike him.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman told the court his client is in custody for other alleged offences.

He added that McTaggart does not have much of a record for public order offences.

However, he said it was accepted a prison sentence is the only disposal open to the court.
