A man has been jailed for 28 days for ‘mooning’ in court.

Michael Hanrahan was appearing at Derry Magistrates Court via video link when he dropped his trousers and exposed his bare buttocks to the court.

The 33-year-old, of no fixed abode, is charged with possessing a samurai sword, common assault and criminal damage.

The charges relate to an alleged incident on March 2 last year.

The court was dealing with an application to vacate a contest date next week when Hanrahan started to whistle.

District Judge Barney McElholm warned the 33-year-old about his behaviour and Hanrahan replied that he was ‘getting bored’.

The judge told Hanrahan that, if he whistled again, he would be jailed for contempt of court.

Hanrahan then stood up, pulled his trousers down and ‘mooned’ at the court.

The judge jailed him for 28 days for contempt of court.

One of the local solicitors then quipped: ‘I blame it on the full moon’.

Hanrahan will appear in court again at a later date.
