Man stabbed in face in suspected sectarian attack

A man has been stabbed in the face in a suspected sectarian attack in Derry’s Waterside.

A police spokeswoman says the 26-year old was stabbed in the face and ribs as he was walking on Chapel Road at approximately 2am on July 18.

“It was reported that a 26 year old man and a 19 year old female were walking on the Chapel Road when a car pulled up and two males jumped out,” the spokeswoman says.

“Both males had knives. The male was stabbed in the face and ribs, the female was uninjured. His injuries required hospital treatment, they are not believed to be life threatening.

“The two males are described as being in their mid 20’s and one had blond hair,” she says.

Police have confirmed they are investigating a sectarian motive to the attack.
