Prominent republican Pearse McAuley, who originally comes from Strabane, has appeared in court charged with assaulting and threatening to kill his wife on Christmas Eve.
McAuley - who was convicted of killing Garda detective Jerry McCabe in 1996 - appeared at a special sitting of Cavan District Court on December 27.
He is also accused of threatening two other people on the same date (December 24). McAuley will appear again before Harristown District Court in Co Roscommon on January 2.
His wife, Pauline McAuley, a former Sinn Fein councillor and mother-of-two, was injured at a house at Keelderry, Kilnaleck.
He was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison.
