Police in Derry have confirmed they are investigating an incident at the Grangewood Hospital in the grounds of Gransha Park after being called to the facility on Friday night.

It’s understood a member of staff was attacked by a patient at the unit where people are treated for acute mental health problems. The Western Trust yesterday confirmed that an incident had taken place at the hospital, but said they would not be releasing specific details on the alleged attack.

A spokesperson said: “The Trust treats incidents like these very seriously and deals with them in a serious and robust way through the appropriate processes. Any attacks on staff or patients are dealt with by the Trust through the appropriate and relevant processes.”

Grangewood was officially opened by Health Minister Edwin Poots in December 2013 but has been operational since November 2012.

The Hospital replaced the old Gransha admission wards and has a total of 30 en-suite bedrooms.

Police say enquiries are continuing.
