A number of residents, including several elderly people, were moved from their homes by police. Six people were accommodated at a rest centre at the Templemore Leisure Centre

A police spokesperson said: “An investigation has begun to determine the cause of the fire. Information can be given to the CID at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, information can be given to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”

Commenting on the incident, SDLP Councillor for the area Jimmy Carr said: “Given the serious nature of the incident, thankfully no one was seriously injured, or killed.

“This is the second fire in the area in recent months, which is very worrying for residents.

“Praise must be paid to the emergency services who dealt with the situation, and also to those who provided accommodation for the people who were evacuated.

“I urge anyone with any information about what happened to call police.”
