Police probe hate crime assault on charity worker

A CHARITY worker has been assaulted by a gang of men as he collected money outside a shopping centre in Derry.

Police have now launched an appeal for information to help them track down the culprits.

The incident occurred in the Shipquay Street area on Friday last but details have just been released this morning.

A PSNI spokeswoman said today: “Just before 3pm the man, in his early 20’s was collecting for a charity at the entrance of a shopping centre when we was approached by three males, one of which assaulted him causing minor injury.”

She also confirmed: “Police are treating this incident as a hate crime.”

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has information in relation to the assault to contact them at Strand Road on the new non-emergency number 101 or alternatively contact independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
