A woman who was raped and sexually abused by her cousin said she will ‘never get over’ her ordeal.
Martina Johnston, who waived her right to anonymity, spoke to the ‘Journal’ after her abuser was jailed for 11 years at Derry Crown Court.
Frankie McFadden, of Moyola Drive, pleaded guilty to rape, indecent assault and gross indecency.
The 54-year-old also admitted common assault and making a threat to kill between May 1975 and May 1985.
Ms Johnston, who was abused from the age of six, welcomed the sentence given to McFadden.
She said she had lived with her ordeal for the last 38 years, but accepted 11 years was the most McFadden could be given because of the law.
Ms Johnston said that the abuse ruined her childhood and revealed that she has no photographs of herself as a child because they are a ‘constant reminder’ of what happened to her.
She added that she waived her right to anonymity because she wanted to show other victims that they can come forward.
“They have nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed about. The memories will never go away but with the right counselling and support you will get through it”.
