Rioter’s jail term suspended

A man who admitted rioting in the city last year has received a suspended jail term.

Terry Beckett, whose address was given on court papers as Boho Road, Enniskillen, pleaded guilty to riotous behaviour on July 12, 2012.

The charges relate to an incident in the Fahan Street area of the city.

Derry Magistrates Court was told the 23-year-old has had a ‘bad couple of years’ in terms of his criminal record.

However, a defence solicitor told the court Beckett has managed to stay out of trouble for the last six months.

District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a three month jail term for a year.

He warned Beckett that if he came back before the court in the next year, an immediate custodial sentence will be imposed.
