Police in Derry are advising local residents to be wary of ‘cold calls’ about satellite television subscriptions.
Telephone calls have been made to people in the city purporting to be from a leading broadcaster and saying that subscription cards were out of date.
In each case, residents were asked to confirm their banking details.
“This is a scam”, Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan, the Foyle Area Commander, said. “So far we do not believe anyone has been fooled into giving details. It does illustrate, though, the ingenuity of the fraudsters.
Chief Inspector Callaghan added: “They will tailor the nature of their calls, regularly switching the identities of the organisations they claim to represent. Our advice is that you should never release personal or banking details to people you do not know.”
