A Limavady man who sexually assaulted a woman has been ordered to sign the sex offenders register for seven years.
Sydney Mowbray, of Edenmore Park in the town, was convicted of sexually assaulting the woman on May 24, last year.
The injured party did not have to give evidence and the 45-year-old was convicted after District Judge Barney McElholm read the papers in the case.
Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said the incident occurred while Mowbray was under the influence of alcohol.
He told the court alcohol is ‘at the root’ of the 45-year-old’s offending, who does not have any previous similar convictions.
The barrister added that his client ‘doesn’t pose the type of risk’ normally associated with sex offences.
The court was told Mowbray had spent a considerable time on remand and this had allowed him to ‘dry out’.
District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a five month sentence for two years.
