Dylan O’Kane, whose address was given as Rosemount Cottages, “should have gone straight into custody”, said District Judge McElholm.

The court heard that O’Kane’s mother had called the police in the early hours of June 28 this year after he had caused a disturbance at the family home.

Police found O’Kane bare chested on Creggan Road and when they tried to restrain him he lashed out, striking one of the officers.

O’Kane was given a 12-month probation order and was also order to attend an alcohol treatment programme.
