A city councillor has said St. Peter’s High School in Creggan should be knocked down after it was targeted by arsonists on Sunday night.
The Fire Service dealt with a fire in the canteen at the school, which closed for good recently.
SDLP councillor Jim Clifford said: “Those attacking the premises should stop. It’s a disgrace people are setting fires there, they are endangering themselves and others. The sooner the school is knocked down the better and the site used for the benefit of the local community.
“I’d like to see an old people’s home opened on the site as Creggan could sorely do with such a facility.”
Local Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell said; “This could have ended in tragedy. I would appeal to people to stay away from this building.
“ I would also urge the WELB to secure the building until its future is decided.”
