Stitches needed after woman (19)threw bottle at man

A judge has told a woman who threw a glass bottle at a man that her behaviour was ‘unacceptable’.

District Judge Barney McElholm made the comment as 19-year-old Lauren McCool appeared at Derry Magistrates Court this week.

McCool, of Ardgrange, pleaded guilty to assaulting the man on January 12.

The court heard that the injured sustained an injury to his right eye after being hit by the bottle.

He went to hospital and received three paper stitches.

Defence counsel Catherine Devlin told the court her client threw the bottle ‘out of frustration’ after a confrontation with the man.

Ms Devlin told the court that McCool ‘did not mean to cause any injury’ .

The incident was ‘completely out of character’, she said.

Ms Devlin said the 19-year-old is ‘extremely distressed’ as a result of her ‘reckless’ action.

Adjourning sentencing to see if McCool is suitable for community service, District Judge Barney McElholm said this sort of behaviour ‘cannot be tolerated’.

Judge McElholm added: “I don’t understand how anyone can believe throwing a bottle at another human being’s head is acceptable”.

The case was adjourned for McCool to appear in court again on July 5.
