Stole £80 worth of meat

A woman who stole over £80 worth of meat from a local supermarket has had a four month jail term suspended for two years.

Bridget Mary Donegan, of Summerhill Park, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft on March 18, last year.

The local magistrate’s court heard the 26-year-old ordered £84 worth of meat from the meat counter of Supervalu on the Strand Road and left without paying for it.

Donegan was arrested and during police interview claimed she had ordered the meat for a friend and she didn’t know this woman had not paid for it.

However, she refused to name her friend because she didn’t want to get her in trouble.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client now accepts there was ‘something irregular’ going on.

Suspending the jail term, District Judge Barney McElholm said the theft looked like a ‘pre-planner operation’.

He ordered Donegan to pay compensation of £84.75 to Supervalu.
