A Royal Navy submariner from Stabane has been charged with breaching the Official Secrets Act.

29 year-old Edward Devenney, originally from Strabane, was due to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court yesterday.

He was arrested in Plymouth on Tuesday morning by Metropolitan Police Officers but only charged on Wednesday night.

The Strabane man is accused of communicating information on January 28 2012 “which could be deemed to be useful to an enemy of the state.”

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said a number of searches had been carried out as part of the operation but added that police were unable to give any further details about the incident.
