A 26-year-old Limavady man who caused a shop window to shatter after throwing a pint glass at it has received a suspended jail sentence.

Michael Anthony James Patrick McDermott of Glen Bank Walk was sentenced at Limavady Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The court heard the window of the business was completely shattered.

Police obtained CCTV footage from a nearby bar and they identified McDermott throwing the pint glass in the direction of the shop window.

McDermnott was subsequently arrested on December 30 and clothes matching those on the CCTV footage were located and seized.

The court heard McDermott initially accepted it was him on the CCTV footage, but later said he was no longer sure it was him on CCTV.

A defence solicitor said the attack was not targeted at the particular shop, but rather it was “reckless”.

District Judge Liam McNally imposed a three month jail sentence suspended for three years and warned McDermott to “think twice before he throwing any glasses at anyone’s window.”

Judge McNally also ordered McDermott to pay £250 compensation to the owner of the window.
