Suspended jail term for asssault

A teenager who assaulted a woman has received a suspended jail term.

Paula Kelly, whose address was given as Strand Foyer, pleaded guilty to one charge of common assault on November 12, 2011.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the injured party was assaulted outside a shop in Springtown Industrial Estate. She was hit by a third party, who is not before the court, and then 18-year-old Kelly intervened and continued the assault.

The injured party sustained a black eye and cuts and bruises to her face as a result of the incident.

The court was told the teen has a criminal record which is relevant.

Defence solicitor Keith Kyle said his client was ‘not the initial aggressor’ in the assault. He added that the injuries were not the worst the court has ever seen.

District Judge Barney McElholm suspended a three month jail term for one year. He also ordered Kelly to pay £200 compensation to the injured party.
