Suspended sentence for disorderly behaviour

A man who hit his girlfriend during a ‘heated argument’ has received a suspended jail sentence.

George Martin Mullen, of Victoria Road, Bready, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on June 27.

He was not charged with assault because the injured party refused to make a statement to police.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard police were called after the 24-year-old and his girlfriend left a nightclub on the Strand Road.

They were having a ‘heated argument’ and police saw Mullen strike the woman twice on the face, using both hands.

This caused her to stumble backwards and she started crying.

Deputy District Judge Terence Dunlop imposed a two month sentence suspended for two years.

He said this was an ‘horrendous offence. It is highly objectionable to assault a female in that way’.
