Suspicious death of woman in Derry - Detectives given more time to question arrested man

Detectives from the Major Investigation Team investigating the suspicious death of a 21-year-old woman in Derry last summer have been given extra time to question a man arrested earlier this week.

The woman died on August 9, 2020 at Altnagelvin Hospital following what police described as an incident at an address in Gortnessy Meadows, Lettershandoney six days earlier on August 3.

A PSNI spokesperson earlier this week appealed for anyone with information come forward.

“Detectives are keen to hear from anyone with information that could assist their investigation. Please call 101,” the spokesperson said.

Detectives, who were previously granted a further 36 hours to question the arrested man, who is aged 33, confirmed last night they have been given an addition 24 hours to do so.

A PSNI spokesperson said on Thursday evening: “Detectives from the Major Investigation Team investigating the suspicious death of a 21-year-old woman at Altnagelvin hospital on 9 August 2020 following an incident at an address in Gortnessy Meadows, Derry/Londonderry on 3 August, have been granted an additional 24 hours to question a 33-year-old man.”
