A teenager with an addiction to legal highs asked a judge to send him to prison.

Kevin James Harrison, of Jefferson Court, Magazine Street, pleaded guilty to assaulting police on February 3.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that police were called to the City Hotel because a number of were people causing damage to a room.

Hotel staff asked for Harrison to be removed from the premises.

Officers had to force entry to the hotel room as the lock was broken from the inside.

The 18-year-old confronted police and began shouting and swearing. He was holding a large vodka bottle in his hand and began ‘swinging it about’.

Harrison squared up to an officer and swung the vodka bottle towards his face, however it did not strike the officer.

It was revealed to the court Harrison is in breach of a suspended sentence for disorderly behaviour and resisting police.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr said his client ‘has a difficulty with legal highs and that is why he wants a short period in custody to beat that habit’.

Harrison was jailed for four months.
