A man who threatened to cut his brother’s head off while armed with a machete has received a suspended sentence.
Damien Hegarty, of Elm Close, pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill, criminal damage and possession of a machete.
The charges relate to an incident in the Hazelbank area of the city on January 12.
Derry Magistrate’s Court heard police were called after the 41-year-old broke a car window and made a threat to his brother whilst armed with a machete.
Hegarty was arrested and during police interview admitted he had an argument with his brother.
He also admitted having the machete and ‘might have threatened to kill him but wouldn’t have carried it out’.
The 41-year-old said he only wanted to ‘frighten his brother’.
The court heard Hegarty has eight previous convictions but has not appeared before the court in almost 20 years.
District Judge Peter King suspended a four month sentence for 18 months.
