Told officer he’d rip his head off

A man who received a six month jail term has been told “you only get so many chances”.

District Judge Barney McElholm made the comment as he jailed 26-year-old Thomas Patrick Kelly.

Kelly, of Corrody Road, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour and assault on police on June 27.

It was revealed to the court Kelly was in breach of a suspended jail term at the time of the incident.

The court heard police encountered Kelly in Shipquay Street in the early hours of the morning. He was abusive to them and told an officer he would “rip your f****** head off”.

He then lashed out at an officer, hitting him on the chest, and CS spray had to be deployed.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr said his client “reacted in a way that wasn’t acceptable in any form or fashion”.

He said all of Kelly’s convictions are alcohol-related and that is “clearly a problem”.
