A driver has been racially abused and chased from his van after refusing to give a man a lift in Derry.

Police say they are treating the incident, which happened on Sunday, August 18 on the city’s Strand Road, as a hate crime.

“At approximately 12.15pm police received a report that as a man parked his van on the road he was approached by an unknown male who asked him for a lift,” a PSNI spokeswoman said.

“When the driver of the van refused the other male became racially abusive shouting and swearing. He chased the driver of the van into a property in the road. The man did not sustain any injuries.

“The unknown male then went on to kick the door of the van, causing damage,” she said.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information can contact the PSNI on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
