SDLP councillor Brian Tierney has today urged parents to be mindful of the whereabouts of their children after witnessing antisocial behaviour in the Glencaw and Leafair areas of Derry last night.
Following a night of violence where petrol was set alight on main roads and police were attacked with missiles, the local councillor also exposed a more worrying trend in the latest disturbances claiming young people were attempting to set each other on fire.
He said: “Residents in this particular area of Derry have been putting up with antisocial behaviour of this sort for a considerable amount of time - it is totally unacceptable. I was in the area last night again and witnessed first hand the extent of the reckless and abusive behaviour being carried out by a group of youths. The verbal abuse being given to residents was totally uncalled for.
“Young people had also filled empty sports bottles with petrol and were covering each other with it while attempting to set each other alight.”
Colr. Tierney added: “The majority of young people in the area last night were from other parts of the city.
“I would appeal to parents right across the city to make sure they know where their children are and what type of activities they are involved in.”
