The ‘Cross-border Jobs Expo’, will provide jobseekers with an opportunity to meet with prospective employers on the day. A number of key employers from the region will be in attendance. Information will be available on current job vacancies and the Department of Social Protection’s EURES service will provide jobseekers with details of job opportunities, both cross border and in the wider European labour market. There will be information on a range of upskilling opportunities, supports and advice to those interested in returning to work. The event will, therefore, not only be of interest to jobseekers but to adults interested in returning to education or training.

Declan Doherty, DSP Area Manager for Inishowen, said: “This year we want to focus solely on Jobs and Employers. This approach is based on feedback from participants and a joint review by IDP and ourselves. The Dept for Communities (DfC) in Northern Ireland and EURES Cross Border are also key partners in this new Cross Border Jobs Expo. It is timely as it takes place during National Jobs Week, being organised by the Dept of Social Protection.”

IDP Joint CEO, Shauna McClenaghan, sees it as “a great opportunity for local people to meet directly the different sectors with vacancies on offer at the Expo, and is a chance to engage with local employers some of whom are currently recruiting.”

Thomas Timlin, DSP Case Officer, Buncrana Intreo, explains “The role of the Department of Social Protection has expanded in recent years. In addition to providing weekly payments to jobseekers, the Department, through its local Intreo Centres, also offers a range of education, training and personal development programmes to help jobseekers to get back to work. The Department is, therefore, delighted to be a partner in the event.”

Dympna Boyle, EURES Cross Border Coordinator

“The EURES IE/NI Cross Border Partnership is very happy to support this event which we hope will benefit both employers and jobseekers in this cross border region. It is important for the people living here in the Border region to have this kind of event in their locality highlighting the opportunities for employment in their own region and to help them with any queries on cross border employment. It is equally important for employers to be able to access the larger cross border labour market”.

Pauline Millar, Assistant Director, Department for Communities said “Job Fairs provide an excellent opportunity for jobseekers to speak directly with employers, allowing them to ask questions and better understand the roles they are applying for. Employers in turn get to meet a wide range of prospective applicants and recruit effectively. Being in the heart of the community this Expo maximises the benefits for the area and gives jobseekers a chance to see the recruitment opportunities available to them. The Department for Communities is delighted to be supporting this event which offers real job opportunities to those seeking employment.”
