A decision to refuse a child in Ballykelly a bus pass has been branded “cruel”, SDLP Colr. Gerry Mullan has said.
Colr. Mullan said the Transport Division of the Education Authority has claimed the child is 77 metres short of the three-mile distance from St Mary’s, Limavady.
“This scheme is badly need of review. It fails to take into account obvious road safety issues, and it fails to recognise that it is completely unacceptable to expect a young child to walk this sort of distance in the winter time when inclement weather is frequently the case. This decision means that there are children in Ballykelly living within metres of each other who are treated differently and that is wrong.
Colr. Mullansaid he would be making his party’s views known to the Education Authority in their consultation on the future of school transport. He also encouraged parents to respond and write to the education minister.
