Dad's shock at son's suspected Meth find

The white powder was found in the Drumachose Park area by the boy on his way home from school with his brother and their aunt last Friday.

The man, who prefers not to be named, said the small bag of white powder was stashed inside a plastic container usually found inside a chocolate egg that contains a toy. The boys told their father what they had found and he subsequently alerted police, who have since said they believe the white powder to be Methamphetamine.

“It’s very frightening, very much so, because they could have ingested it,” the man said. “We are very thankful they had the sense not to do anything silly with it. We are reassured they did the right thing and they came and told me.”

The man hopes highlighting what happened will encourage parents to speak with their children about drugs. He believes drug awareness sessions should be be held, not just at secondary level, but also in primary schools. He said whether the drugs were dropped or dumped, children need to be aware.

“If this helps raise awareness then that’s a good thing. My kids were smart enough to do the right thing and it reinforces the message that if kids see something like this then tell someone,” he said.

DUP Colr. Alan Robinson spoke with the family. He urges parents to be vigilant. He commended the boys for passing the bag of powder to their parents.

“This weekend the Limavady community could have been learning about a tragedy and I, therefore, make a community appeal asking for vigilance,” said Colr. Robinson.
