Dallat in cross-border move on ferry

East Derry SDLP Assembly Member John Dallat will accompany Donegal TD’s and councillors to meet the Republic’s Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Mr Leo Varadkar next Wednesday in Dáil Éireann .

He said: “The future of the Foyle Ferry Service is critical to the future of tourism in the North West on both sides of the border. Since its inception this service has demonstrated beyond doubt that there is a crying need for a ferry across the Foyle linking Derry and Donegal.

“I am delighted to support the campaign for funding for the ferry service to ensure its future and that ticket prices are affordable.

“I have dealt previously with Minister Varadkar when there was a recommendation that the coastguard service at Malin Head should close and I was delighted with the minister’s decision to secure its future. I have already secured an undertaking from the Assembly’s Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy that he will talk to Minister Varadkar on the future of the Magilligan-Greencastle ferry and I hope that the outcome will be as successful as that of the coastguard campaign.”
