A Derry Irish dancing instructor has been invited to host a week-long master class at a leading dance school in North America.

Linda Doherty, founder of the LegenDerry Irish Dancing School, has been invited to the Gallagher School of Dancing in Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania,

She leaves tomorrow (Saturday).

Ms. Doherty, of Francis Street, said she was “delighted” to have been invited.

“Every summer they invite an Irish dancing teacher over as the pupils love to keep in touch with dancing in Ireland as much as Irish dancing. They want to learn authentic Irish dance as sometimes the American steps are changed slightly when they are taught over there.”

What caught the eye in Pennsylvania was the work the LegenDerry Dance School has completed this year, which Linda posted on Facebook.

The school also focuses more on dancing for the love of dance rather than competitively at the feiseanna.

‘Good year’

Having been established only last year, Legenderry Dance School currently boasts 40 pupils.

“It has been a good year,” smiled Linda. “We did an inter-generational dance project which has had a few hits online and I think that helped get me this invite.

“I also think that the fact everyone is focusing on Derry due to the City of Culture award really helped me.”

Linda will be travelling to the school and staying with another Derry girl, Fidelma Gallagher who established the Gallagher School.

“It puts the LegenDerry School on the map internationally,” said Ms. Doherty, who has been dancing since aged six.

“Irish dancing has a huge following in America and they are eager to see how it is taught here.

“Their enthusiasm for Irish dance is great. The only unfortunate thing about the trip is that I have to put my own classes on hold while I’m away.”

It certainly won’t be a holiday as Linda, a former Irish national champion, will offer two classs daily. That is, six hours of dancing a day for five days.!

“The workshops will be non-stop,” she laughed.

Linda runs the LegenDerry Dance School from Magee Dance Studio on Duncreggan Road.

Children’s classes and ceili classes are also on offer.
