Derry alert: Homes evacuated after ‘suspicious object’ found in garden

Homes have been evacuated after a suspicious device was discovered in a garden in the Waterside area of Derry.

Inspector Sam Shearer said: “A suspicious object has been located in the front garden of a property.

“A cordon is in place at Limavady Road and Broomhill Avenue and members of the public should avoid the area at present.”

Due to ongoing security alert in Trafalgar Court there is a diversion on Limavady Road at the entrance to Broomhill Avenue.

Nelson Drive and Broomhill Avenue are closed but traffic is moving on the Limavady Road.

Trafalgar Court and Nelson Drive are being evacuated but it would appear only a handful of residents are at home at present, said police.

Sperrin Park community centre has been opened for anyone that wishes to make use of it.

ATO has been tasked.
