Derry gran Sallly knits squares for baby blankets

As part of the ‘Derry Square Knitters’ campaign being run by the Derry Refugee Solidarity Group, talented craftswoman Sally Mullan has crocheted an amazing 190 six-inch squares over the past three weeks. The squares will be sewn together to make baby blankets which will be taken out to Kos in Greece by the charity St. Vincent de Paul to help refugee families.

81 year old Sally from Carnhill in the city was inspired to help by her grandson Joseph, who volunteered with refugees while on a recent visit to Cologne in Germany. She says: “Joseph was ‘couch-surfing’ in Germany and on his second day in Cologne the local man he was staying with took him to a camp where he met 400-500 refugees coming off the train. Although he doesn’t speak any German, Joseph immediately started to help to distribute water, food and clothing to the refugees. He showed us on Skype a room where refugee women with babies could change, feed and care for their children. It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch, which is why I decided to do whatever I could to help.”
