A gym in Derry is organising a series of fundraising events to help a local family make their Donegal holiday home wheelchair accessible for their nine-year-old son who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
Little Travis McMenamin’s condition worsened at the end of 2014 and as a result of DMD he has been confined to a wheelchair.
Travis’ family own a mobile home in a caravan park in Kerrykeel in Co. Donegal. The caravan is Travis’ favourite place in the world and when owner of Fighting Fit gym in Springtown Industrial Estate heard of Travis’ plight he decided to try and help the family out.
“I know Travis’ mum and dad. Both Darren and Tara are members of the gym but they keep themselves to themselves.
“I got chatting to Darren last week and when he told me he didn’t know how he was going to make the mobile-home wheelchair accessible for Travis I decided I wanted to try and help.”
On February 6, Fighting Fit gym will host a special fundraiser event in aid of little Travis.
The event is open to the public and a Fighting Fit gym membership is not required.
All of the money raised at the event will be donated to Travis and his family to help them make the Kerrykeel holiday home wheelchair accessible.
“Darren and his wife are overwhelmed. There are other people from the gym who are running the Omagh half marathon for Travis. The more people who take part the better it will be for little Travis,” explained Seamus.
