Derry has more miles of active greenway than Paris and is leading the way

Derry has more active public greenway than Paris and is leading the way in the development of cycleways and walkways.

That’s according to Infrastrucure Minister Chris Hazzard, who, surprisingly, revealed the city has more miles of active greenway than the French capital during an exchange with Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney at the Assembly on Tuesday.

Mr McCartney asked the Minister if, “given the recent announcements of a number of greenways in the North West, should one of the priorities going forward be trying to link greenways to waterways to ensure that we

have a sort of connectivity.”

The Minister replied: “We can do an awful lot, not just for the tourists who come to our island and avail themselves of the growing active tourism market but for local people who are very interested in an active life and

practices.

“We see this. Derry is a great example: I believe that we have more active greenway in Derry than in other cities such as Paris.

“Derry is very much leading the way, and I will shortly publicise a strategy for greenways going forward. That will very much be at the centre of my programme of work.”
