Derry to host world congress on suicide prevention

Derry will host the 30th World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (I.A.S.P.) in 2019, it has been revealed.

The announcement was made at a special launch on Derry’s Walls on Wednesday.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Elisha McCallion helped to launch the prestigious congress.

Deputy First Minister tweeted a photograph from the launch and confirmed the congress would be held in Derry in 2019.

“The 30th World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention 2019 will be held in Derry,” said Mr. McGuinness.

The I.A.S.P. is based in Washington D.C. in the USA.

It’s not the first time the I.A.S.P. has held the world congress in Ireland. The event was held in Killarney in 2007.

Other cities to host the world congress include Montreal (2015), Montevideo (2009), Durban (2005) and San Francisco (1987).

The I.A.S.P. was founded by the late Professor Erwin Ringel and Dr. Norman Farberow in 1960, I.A.S.P. now includes professionals and volunteers from more than 50 different countries.

The I.A.S.P. is a Non-Governmental Organization (N.G.O.) in official relationship with the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) concerned with suicide prevention.
