Derry is one of the ‘loneliest’ cities in the UK, according to research.
The research, which was carried out by Opinium Research on behalf of the Big Lunch, reported that almost three quarter (72 per cent) of people from Derry who took part in the survey admitted to feeling lonely either often, always or sometimes and it was most acute amongst people aged between 18 and 34.
Furthermore, 33 per cent of people from Derry said they have less interaction with people know now than they did five years ago.
The Big Lunch is an organisation focused on bringing communities together by encouraging increased interaction amongst neighbours.
This year’s Big Lunch will take place on Sunday June 7.
Derry health facilitator, Margaret Cunningham, is organising her own Big Lunch event in Hazelbank on July 1.
“I wanted to organise something during the school holidays - it’s important children are able to attend as well.
“The whole point of the Big Lunch is to encourage interaction amongst people in their respective communities. It’s an amazing idea,” she said.
Anyone who would like to bring the Big Lunch to their neighbourhood on Sunday 7 June 2015 can request a FREE planning pack from www.thebiglunch.com or by calling 0845 850 8181.
