'˜Derry people have suffered a decade of neglect' say SDLP

The SDLP Foyle candidates for the Assembly election submitted their nomination papers in Derry today.

The SDLP contingent which included Assembly nominees Gerard Diver, Mark H Durkan and party leader Colum Eastwood, as well as party founder John Hume, met with Foyle Electoral Officer Patricia Murphy in order that they may be considered for selection in May 5 election.

Colum Eastwood said: ”This is a change election. The choice is between a renewed SDLP offering a new alternative and those currently in charge who only offer more of the same. This election offers a chance to give our verdict on their failed record.

“The SDLP offers a government of actual substance, not just symbolism. We will use the power of government to spread opportunity and wealth throughout the whole of the North, not just to certain parts of Belfast. Here in Derry, that means we will deliver the road to Belfast, the road to our capital in Dublin and expand the university at Magee.

“We will only enter government if these are delivered. That is the choice before the people of Derry.”

Mark H Durkan said, “I am proud to once again be standing to represent the people of Foyle in the Assembly. The people of Derry know they have suffered a decade of neglect while the DUP and Sinn Fein have controlled the Executive. They have proven themselves unfit to deliver for the North West. No matter how they try to spin it, the people of Derry are wise to their charade. Our fairness pledge will ensure that Executive cannot continue to overlook the West when it comes to investing in jobs and infrastructure.”

Gerard Diver said, “The SDLP are offering a new deal for our young people. We do not accept that trading university places to cut tax for big business makes economic sense. By increasing university places we will provide the skilled workforce to attract jobs and end forced emigration. The priority is the long over due expansion of Magee where historic underinvestment has caused a brain drain in Derry. We will ensure that our young people can build a future here.”
