Derry’s Caolán is ‘magnifico’ in Milan

A young Derry man’s dream came true when he performed a DJ set in front of a crowd of over 2000 people in Milan.

Caolán McGinley, from Creggan, performed his DJ set prior to the UEFA Europa League game between Inter Milan and Celtic in the San Siro last month.

Speaking to the Journal Caolán said the experience was something he will never forget.

“On the Wednesday night before the big game I was asked to play in front of a huge crowd before ‘Shebeen’ and ‘Glasnevin’ played,” explained Caolán.

“It was a bit daunting stepping out in front of such a large crowd but once I played the first tune the place was bouncing.

“Being from Derry, I felt it was important to fire in a few numbers from ‘The Undertones’ including ‘Teenage Kicks’ which went down a treat. The atmosphere was electric as ‘Shebeen’ took to the stage when I played ‘Praise You’ by Fat Boy Slim. The event was attended by fans from Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany, Italy and Sweden.

The venue was a famous left wing social centre, ‘Leoncavallo’ a project which helps migrants by providing meals and promoting anti-fascism through education through many debate nights and social events such as concerts, and was set up in 1975 in Milan.

“The result on the night didn’t work out but it was a great experience and a chance of a lifetime ,” added Caolán.
