Derry coiffeur Michael Deery will swap Fountain Street for the X Factor dressing rooms next weekend after being booked for the biggest gig of his career by stylist-to-the-stars Adam Reed.

The local hairdresser got the surprise of his life on Tuesday when Mr. Reed, one half of the world-renowned hairdressing duo Percy and Reed, got on the blower to Derry to ask Michael if he fancied doing people’s hair at the hit ITV talent show finals in London.

“It’s all really surreal here at the minute,” said Michael, who operates from a studio shared with local make-up stylist Laura Carton in 2-4 Fountain Street.

Michael explained how he’d long been a fan of Mr. Reed and that they mutually followed one another’s work via social media. However, he never expected anything to come from it.

“It was bit of a shock. I’ve been following him for years. He’s one of the biggest names in the industry. He’s huge,” said Michael.

“He ‘liked’ away at our photographs since we opened and we were following one another on Instagram but there had been no direct contact, a few times he commented on a few photos, interacting that way, picture-sharing on Instagram. Then he contacted me on Tuesday out of the blue and asked was I free next Saturday and Sunday. Of course, I was!”

Consider those tickets booked as Michael prepares to join Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger at the X factor showdown next week.
