Derry man Michael (Mickey) Doherty is among a group of local people to have reached the final of a competition to fund the Supervalu ‘Superstar of the Year’
The Galliagh man is well known across the north west as a singer, entertainer and M.C. and for his tireless charity fundraising work across the region.
Mr. Doherty was nominated by a friend, Debbie, and he will now join a number of other local finalists on Thursday at the Titanic Hotel in Belfast, where the overall winner and second and third placed runners-up will be announced.
A total of 36 people from across the north have made it through out of hundreds of nominations.
Each one of the finalists is representing a Supervalu Store and Mickey has been nominated for the Ballykelly store.
Debbie said she was delighted that Mickey was one chosen as a finalist and she added it was great to see him get a bit of recognition for all that he has done for people in the community.
She said: “I felt he deserved a bit of recognition. Mickey would leave one event and travel to another before he would let you down.
“Any commitments he makes he is always there to put a smile on people’s faces.
“He has come through a lot and I would love to see him win the award and the prize.”
The other local finalists include Jamie Harkin, Catherine Feeney, Sylvia Neely, Leo McCloskey, Sean McLaughlin, Jennifer Smith, Rose McElhinney, Dr Mukesh Chugh, Gerry Burns and Sean Scullion. Compere on the night at the awards will be broadcaster Claire McCollum and the prize will include a five star family holiday in the Maldives.
