Carmel McConnellogue from the Long Tower area of the city, and her boyfriend James Devenney, were among the crowds heading to the Stade de France on Monday when she spotted the ticket lying on the ground.

Carmel, who is still in France, said: “There was thousands and thousands of people coming up. We weren’t even at the stadium yet. You had to go up a walkway and there was another 1,000 feet until you get passed security. The buzz was amazing.

“I saw the ticket lying there and I said to James, ‘we will pick it up and take it to security and if somebody goes to them they will be able to get it back’.

“We were both keeping an eye out on the way for somebody that looked panicked and there was two young fellows coming down and looking around and I said to him, ‘did you lose your ticket?’ and he said ‘Yes!’ and he put his arms around me and I gave him back his ticket.

“He was so relieved. To travel all that way over, like ourselves, you really want to get into the game.”

Carmel said the atmosphere was electric inside the Stade de France, as the boys and green delivered for the supporters.

“The game was brilliant,” she said. “The atmosphere was fantastic. Ireland played them out of the park.”
