DJ award - contribution to arts and culture
The award for Contribution to Arts and Culture was given to Dr. Mukesh Chugh.
In addition to his contributions in his full time job as a Consultant Anaesthetist in Altnagelvin Hospital he has pursued a busy second career as a community volunteer.
Those who nominated Dr. Chugh cited his ability to organise and motivate others as a key element of his role as a cultural spearhead.
Dr. Chugh was described as taking the lead to inspire the energetic Diwali project - Festival of Lights - and through that particular project has built a community movement dedicated to improving regional togetherness.
His efforts have been credited with leading to new, more balanced relationships between locals in Derry and different ethnic groups.
The audience heard how Dr. Chugh’s efforts have “helped to shape an inclusive society which is respectful, embracing and reflective of the multiple cultural identities living in Derry.”
The Derry-based consultant also launched the Northern Ireland chapter of BAPIO (British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin).
He has also worked with the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minority and the North West Migrant Forum.
On the night, Dr. Chugh was described as someone who “has gone above and beyond to make a lasting impression” on all those who know him.
