Donegal TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, will speak at a special candlelit vigil for the people of Gaza in Derry tonight.
The event, which is being organised by Ógra Shinn Féin Derry, will focus on all those innocent civilians and in particular, children, who have lost their lives as a direct result of the Israeli led Operation Protective Edge which started four weeks ago.
Ógra Shinn Féin Derry, Chairperson, Michael McCrossan, called for as many people as possible to take part in the event as it is hoped it will send a message of solidarity to the Palestinians living under Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip.
“We are pleased to have Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD for Donegal North East speaking at Tuesday night’s vigil,” said Michael.
“People all over this island are marching in their thousands and attending vigils to protest against Israel’s deadly assault on Gaza.
“All the events, as well as the boycotting of Israeli goods are very important to keep the global pressure on Israel.
“The power of the online news reports and social media is key to getting around the wall of censorship,” he added.
Michael went on to say that Ógra Shinn Féin Derry wanted to reiterated the appeal made by Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams to support the people of Gaza humanitarianly.
“Much of the Gaza strip has been reduced to rubble. At this stage not even children and their refugee families sheltering in United Nations compounds are safe.
“The footage of whole neighbourhoods decimated, homes, schools, hospitals all gone is stark.
“Almost half of this besieged region is now under the control of the Israeli military.
“We want to support the Palestinian call for Gaza to be declared an international disaster area and echo Gerry Adams appeal to the Irish government and the EU to support this humanitarian call.”
If you would like to attend tonight’s vigil you should assemble at the bottom of Fahan Street at 9.30pm. People are being asked to bring candles with them as well as Palestinian flags and emblems of support,
