Peter Egan, a star of Downton Abbey and 80s sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles, has given his support to an online campaign against plans for a 40,000 pig farm on the outskirts of Limavady.
The actor took to social media via his Facebook page, urging people to sign a petiton against the proposal for the pig farm at Moys Road outside Limavady.
On July 25th, Mr Egan posted on Facebook: “‘Pigs like all animals are sentient, truly aware... Pigs are more intelligent than either your cat or dog, they are placed as the fourth most intelligent creature on earth. Pigs are clever creatures with an intelligence way beyond that of a three year old human child. Pigs can respond to their own given name within 7 days of birth. Pigs are highly social animals, they sleep together huddled in nests and while they sleep they love to cuddle up close to one another nose to nose. Pigs also greet other pigs whom they know by rubbing noses much in the way we would shake hands. Pigs are highly co-operative in social groups and show affection by grooming each other. Very much like us, and indeed other animals, they establish social groups and are capable of evaluating the behaviour of other members of the group.’
Mr Egan attributed the statement to the source http://think-differently-about-sheep.com/ and he also shared a link to the petition, adding: “Please support a community in their efforts to stop a proposed development to intensively farm 40,000 pigs per year. They have a petition and need our help. Let’s all sign and share.”
The petition has so far attracted close to 2,000 signatures from people from all over the North, England, Europe, New Zealand and Canada.
One petitioner wrote: “As a home owner in the area our homes are at a high risk of devaluation if this is not stopped. I strongly disagree with this planning proposal. The smell will be unbearable to live beside and health risks are too high...”
Another petitioner stated: “Live next door and it will effect our environment in many bad ways.”
Another woman who lives in the area wrote: “I live on the Glenhead Road and certainly go not want to spend every day unable to open windows due to the noise and smell that this amount of pigs would produce. Glenhead Road is a beautiful peaceful rural area this would be devastating!!”
