SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H Durkan, has called on Transport NI to ensure that they are prepared for the onset of winter.
Mr. Durkan urged anyone with concerns regarding the provision of sandboxes to contact his office directly.
“With the mild October that we are enjoying, it would be easy to forget that winter is just around the corner. However, past experience tells us that winter conditions can arrive suddenly and can cause serious danger and disruption on our roads. I have contacted Transport NI asking them to make the necessary preparations now to avoid traffic chaos in the event of adverse weather.
“Over the next couple of weeks, Transport NI will be distributing sandboxes to locations that meet their criteria. Generally these are steep streets that pose problems for drivers in icy conditions. There will be over 280 across the city. If anyone wants to know if their street is on the list or would like an assessment carried out, please contact my office.”
Mr. Durkan added:
“We need the Department for Regional Development (DRD) to be ready to ensure that Derry isn’t brought to a standstill by snow this year and that people are able to go about their business in a way befitting of a 21st century city.”
