A heritage talk by author Stephen Price about the fascinating life and times of The Earl Bishop Frederick Hervey will be taking place at the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre/Ionad Ealaíon agus Cultúir Ghleann na Ró on Wednesday, 17 August at 7.30pm.
Price, who has recently written a book on Hervey entitled The Earl Bishop, will uncover a host of interesting details about this enigmatic figure, who built Mussenden Temple. He will also be presenting 3D reconstructions of Hervey’s work, including the inside of Downhill House and the Temple itself.
Described as ‘that wicked prelate’ by King George III and ‘a madman’ by politician Charles Fox, Hervey’s life was far from ordinary; rising from obscurity to become a bishop and an earl, collecting art, mansions and beautiful women along the way.
Admission to the talk is free, however places must be booked in advance. Copies of the book will be available for sale on the night.
