Eastwood expresses sadness at death of MP Jo Cox

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood MLA has expressed his sympathy to the Labour Party and the family of Jo Cox who died on Thursday after being shot and stabbed in Birstall, Leeds.

Mr. Eastwood said his thoughts were with Mrs. Cox’s family at this time.

“It is with heartfelt sorrow that I send my condolences and those of the SDLP to the family and friends of Jo Cox,” said Mr. Eastwood.

“Our thoughts are also with her constituents and the Labour Party whom she served with such dedication. They will all be in our prayers on this terrible day.”

Mr. Eastwood added: “The shadow of violence has once again been cast over democracy today. But it is the spirit, the passion and the unimpeachable character of people like Jo and her husband Brendan that makes us stronger than those who carry out this kind of brutality.”

Police are continuing to question a 52 year-old man who was arrested at the scene.
