The former St Peter’s School in Creggan is to be demolished.
Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Campbell yesterday said an initial tendering process in relation to the demolition is to get underway as soon as possible.
The former school site has been associated with antisocial behaviour over recent times and last month was the scene of a deliberate fire.
“Following the recent fire at St Peter’s school I publicly called for the building to be demolished as quickly as possible on health and safety grounds,” Mr Campbell said.
He said after a number of meetings with stakeholders - including Derry City Council Environmental Health Officers, Apex Housing, PSNI, and The Catholic Church - it has now been confirmed demolition is to get underway.
“I am pleased to announce today that I have received notice that the tendering process for the demolition of the site is to begin and I hope that this can be done as speedily as possible.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this about,” he said.
